Phyllostachys edulis (Moso Bamboo) (formerly known as P. heterocycla)  

This is one of the most cultivated timber bamboos in the east.  It is the bamboo featured in the fighting scenes in the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon movie.  It is rather slow to get started and young plants need some protection for the intense Florida sun.  In time, this bamboo will create a forest.

Phyllostachys nigra (Black Bamboo)

This is the original "Black Bamboo" from China.  The new canes are green and over a period of several months to over a year they gradually turn a deep black color.  Used extensively in furniture construction and handicrafts, this bamboo is an excellent addition to the landscape garden.  Will not get as large in Florida as in colder climates.  The canes are somewhat arching in growth form.

Pleioblastus distichus (Dwarf Fern Leaf Bamboo)
