Black-bellied Whistling Ducks

8-11-07

While we were watching the wild peacocks at the pond today, some Black-bellied Whistling Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) flew over and landed on the dead pine tree on the far side of the pond.  They were formerly known as the Black-bellied Tree Duck, as they are fond of perching in trees, unlike most other ducks.  They actually nest in tree cavities.  Their range covers Central and South America, as well as the southeastern United States.
